30 Dates, One Year On … The Skype Date

Diligent 30 Dates readers will know The Skype Date wasn’t an official one of the Original 30.  Though if I’d been officially counting, I actually went on 31 first dates in the three months before my 30th birthday.

I met the Skype Date on Tinder, the same weekend that I had my dates with The Exhibitionist and The Big Kid.  An(other) Army Captain (yes, there may be a trend developing there!), he was working on at barracks about three hours away from London, so we decided to schedule our first ‘date’ over Skype.  It’s the first and only time I’ve had a Skype date, and I think both of us would freely admit that what appeared to be chemistry over Skype was missing when we met in person.  It was a valuable lesson – and an extension of the lesson I’d learned early on, that you can never know if you really fancy someone, just over texts and phone calls.

Interestingly, some of you may remember that The Coincidental Dater got into contact with this blog, after she had a similar experience with the Skype Date.  They had a great first date, but then things didn’t go so well on the second.

There’s an expression I love about dating –

One day you will meet someone, who makes you realise why it never worked out with anyone else.

And that expression certainly applies to The Skype Date.  I’ve been hinting for some time that one of the Original 30 is now engaged.  Yes, ok, so he wasn’t technically one of the 30, but this time last year the Skype Date was very much single, and now he’s planning a wedding!

See – SO much can change in a year of dating!

Like the Queen’s Guard, The Skype Date has also found love within the military –

“We first met in Afghanistan in 2012 and got to know eachother whilst waiting for a helicopter to take us from Camp Bastion into the Green Zone. As always, the RAF were late so we had about an hour and a half to kill! We remained in contact but neither of us did anything about it until we met up just before Christmas 2013 when we got it together.”

Needless to say, The Skype Date’s world has changed considerably in the last year!

So what was his best date of the year?  “Good question. All of the dates that I have had were good/ok but its hard to put them in any order as they generally never really went anywhere.”  And his worst?  “Arriving an hour and a half late to a Tinder date due to being stuck in traffic. I couldn’t text or call my date as her phone was broken. Cue lots of grovelling and charm offensive on arrival. Needless to say, it didn’t go that well!”

Sounds like he wasn’t too big a fan of single life! “I did massively enjoy the dating scene and my foray into the world of Tinder, but without sounding smug I am glad its over (I hope)!”

Did his involvement in 30 Dates change his outlook on dating?  “I think it made me appreciate the lengths that other guys will go to on a  first date, and as such was a bit of a bar setter.”

And the biggest lesson The Skype Date has learnt this past year?  “Be yourself. If you are not happy with something, whether it is dating or otherwise – do something about it. At the end of the day, it is your life. Take charge of it.”  Wise words!

Thanks again to The Skype Date for his involvement with the blog, and huge congratulations to both him and his fiancee on their engagement.  Here at 30 Dates, we wish them all the best for the future 🙂
